How to choose the best Lighting for your Middle Tennessee Home

Choose the Best Lighting for your Tennessee Home

We recently moved to Murfreesboro, TN and our home is very bright, that was one of the selling points when we were looking for a home. We previously had a home with sky lights and knew we wanted a bright inviting home. I feel like in these cold winter months lighting can affect our moods in positive or negative influences. Nashville and Middle Tennessee have fairly mild winters but some weeks it seems like the sun has left the building!! Let’s talk about some good lighting guides for your TN home.

Whether it is a romantic dining room or a home office, finding the right lighting for each space in your home is essential to making it functional and inviting. So what should you consider when choosing lamps or lighting fixtures to ensure they will provide the right kind of light for your space, while still fitting in with the décor of the room?

Function Before Fashion

Naturally, you want your lighting choices to match and complement the décor of your home. If they aren’t the right functional choice for the space they will call home, your initial infatuation with them will likely fade. For work spaces such as kitchens or offices, be sure your lighting will provide ample brightness while being easy on the eyes. For rooms such as the living room or dining room, you’ll want to consider lighting sources that are adjustable to allow for relaxation and a romantic atmosphere, as well as the ability to work and play with enough light to see. It is also important to consider the financial and environmental impact of the lighting you use. Using energy efficient bulbs and dimmers can reduce your carbon footprint and your electricity bill.

Size Matters!

If you have a small traditional dining room, choosing that large ballroom-sized chandelier you fell in love with may not be the best idea. Also, going with recessed lighting for a large foyer, while functional, can make the space feel cold and uninspired. Making sure that the fixtures or lamps you choose are proportional to the space they will call home will make the room look well designed.

Using Light as Decoration

While choosing lighting for a room requires balancing form and function, lighting can also be a great way to highlight existing features in a room. Whether it is a great painting over the mantle, a few antiques in the hall, or a unique feature in your space, using lighting to highlight them can add a finished and dramatic look to any room.

Lighting can really make all the difference in any room, and can make all the hard work you have put into choosing the other décor elements of your home worth the effort, looking finished and spectacular! Think outside of the box and use lighting to define your home.

Here are a few ideas that will brighten and spruce up your area

A small lamp in a hall bathroom is a great addition not only to the bathroom but the soft light it will produce in the hallway.

Under cabinet lights are HUGE!! I’ve seen them sell home, literally, people fall in love with lights that show off beautiful granite and backsplashes.

Outdoor Lamps on a covered porch, sunroom or protected deck are very functional as well as string lights on a patio, deck or outdoor space are like an instant inviting party that is an extension of your home.

Nashville has 70 degree days in pretty much every month so extend your home onto that porch, balcony, and patio and enjoy your backyard oasis.

Flameless candles and or tea lights are very warm and inviting. We have multiple of these in high spaces in our home and they are on a timer. The area above your cabinets is a great place to add a little décor and ambience with flameless candles.

Find décor pieces that produce light but are not necessarily a lamp for instance a scentsy scent warmer or I have a globe that lights up in my office that gives just the perfect amount of light into the hallway in the evening.

Have fun with your Lighting, picking the right type will brighten any room.

Thanks,

Guide to a Clean Home in 15 Minutes a Day for your Nashville Home

Clean Your Home In 15 Minutes A Day

Housework has a way of getting overwhelming quickly. You put a few things off and before you know it you’re facing hours of cleaning just to get it back to normal. But if you plan carefully and stick to a plan, you can get all of your basic housework done in only about 15 minutes a day, and keep it clean and company-ready all the time.

Start With A Baseline

You’ll have to do that deep cleaning before you start, because otherwise you’ll always be playing catch up. Set a day aside and clean your Nashville  house from top to bottom.  The weather in Nashville TN is so unpredictable, but 7 out of 12 months usually have a day or 2 that your able to open windows and air out your home!  If you stick to the simple 15-minute-a-day plan from here on out, you’ll be able to keep up and not have to do as much deep cleaning through out.

Your Daily Fifteen

Make a list of the main cleaning jobs in your home.

These will usually include vacuuming/floor sweeping, cleaning bathrooms, dusting, washing floors and counters, and laundry. The things on your list may differ depending on the size of your home and how many people live there, as well as the type of flooring you have.

Select one or two things to do each day. Make the most of your time by some of our secrets so you are combining chores and minimal effort.

How It Looks

Something my wife and I have put into play since we moved to Murfreesboro TN  is having a schedule, yes it is flexible and doesn’t always stay the same, but, it helps us stay on track!

For example we have a few small things daily so it doesn’t get as overwhelming.

Monday: Kitchen Clean Up

The weekends we tend to cook a lot, so our kitchen needs a little attention for the week.

Wipe countertops, sweep, and vacuum, shake out rugs, and take a quick inventory on food. How many leftovers are we storing, what can be thrown away, and what do we need for our week.

Tuesday: Bathroom Fun

A friend gave my wife great advice on bathrooms and that is keep your cleaning supplies in the bathroom  Thank you Megan Overby!! If you have some spray cleaner, bleach wipes and paper towels, then you only need 5 minutes or so to wipe down counters, Windex mirrors and take out the trash. If you put toilet cleaner in the toilet before you start then after you’ve wiped counters its ready to be cleaned.

Wednesday: Dust/Vacuum Day

I love dust wipes. They are so easy and quick to use. Keep a few in each room and, once again, you have your supplies, so as you walk past the shelves in the living room you can do a quick fly-by with your dust wipes and, before you know it, everything is dust free. After you have dusted, do an overall vacuum of the house. If your home is 2 levels it’s really helpful to have 2 vacuums, or at least a dust buster on each floor. Split up the levels, so vacuum Lower level Wednesday  and Thursday do the upstairs while your waiting on laundry.

Thursday: Sheet/Towel/Blanket Wash Day

Yes, these things take longer than 15 minutes overall, but not your actual time, just waiting to switch out loads and nothing is better than clean sheets, in my opinion, but if you wait till the weekend when the majority of laundry gets done, it takes up valuable washing time  So, we like to knock these out on Thursday. Same thing with Blankets (we keep our furniture protected with blankets from our dog and toddler) and Towels. If you are like us and sometimes leave your sheets, towels, etc. in the wash too long, check out our post on how to get rid of that mildew smell. It is life changing and will be posted later this week.  It’s a towel saver!

Friday: Anything Extra Day

Some weeks the bathrooms get forgotten about or the sheets don’t make it to the wash, so Friday is our make up day.

Weekends: Catch All

I hope everyone gets to spend their weekends with family and friends but if you’re like us we usually have a project or busy schedule. Use the weekends to finish up on anything extra and try to get some R&R or enjoy our beautiful city of Nashville TN!

Housework doesn’t have to be exhausting and eat up all of your valuable time. If you can just do a little each day, it is so much easier and you will always be ready when that neighbor, mother-in-law, or friend surprises you with a visit.

Hope this guide can help you and please send us any great cleaning tips and secrets your family uses!

Adam Killgore
